Your Course(s)
Aberdovey
Aberdovey Golf Club stands at the mouth of the Dovey Estuary overlooking Cardigan Bay. It is a traditional links course sandwiched between the Cambrian Mountains and the mid Wales coastline.
Bernard Darwin played in the first Walker Cup match in 1922 – and the first literary giant of the game. The second, Ian Woosnam. They both fell in love with Aberdovey.
Darwin was there when the club was founded in 1892 but remembers golf being played on that precious strip of turf between sea and the seashore and hills in the early 1800’s when they cut nine flowerpots into the soil as holes.
Woosnam has also found it to be a spiritual home. The course wends a traditional route out and back, with sand dunes as sentinels and the wind as friend and foe. It is a place worth a long pilgrimage for any golfer.
Porthmadog
Designed by James Braid in 1905 the Course is made up of two distinct halves. The front nine are away from the coast and although the soil and terrain are more accurately described as heathland, water makes an appearance on five of these holes.
The back nine head for the sea, and some beautiful scenery. The course is transformed into pure links that has been likened to a miniature Troon.
Royal St Davids
A former president of Royal St Davids put it perfectly: “Harlech is a magical place”. So it is. Deep in Merlin country, the course is in the shadow of the towering castle built by Edward I in the 13th century to keep the Welsh in check.
In the shadow of the Harlech Castle, Royal St David’s golf course is a great links courses. Founded in 1894, King George V was later a patron. Royal St David’s has hosted many top amateur and professional events and is guaranteed to provide all golfers a fine test of golf and an unforgettable experience.
Royal St David’s – like Royal Porthcawl – would be counted in any list of the world’s best courses.
